Iran Election Watch Launches Website to Cover Iran's 2013 Presidential Campaign in English

Related: News, Elections

Iran Election Watch announced today the launch of its English-language news website exclusively devoted to coverage of Iran's 2013 presidential campaign.

The ongoing nuclear controversy, continuing regional instability, and the aftermath of Iran's disputed 2009 election make this election of global interest. Foreign Policy has called the vote one of eight "elections that could change the world in 2013."

Until now, there has been no major news website, in English, solely devoted to the coverage of Iranian politics.

"We are pleased to offer the non-Persian speaking world access to comprehensive news about this election," said award-winning journalist, Denise Ajiri, a Founder of Iran Election Watch. "We believe there will be a wide audience interested in learning more about this watershed campaign."

The website's target audience includes journalists, bloggers, analysts, and news consumers worldwide. Iran Election Watch is modeled on U.S. election-focused websites like Real Clear Politics and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Politifact. The site will feature breaking election news as well as background on Iran's election law, political system, and past election results. The website will also report on the Iranian media's campaign coverage, focusing on how coverage of events in the Persian-language media differs from that in the international media.

Over the next two weeks, Iran Election Watch will publish a series of profiles of announced and likely presidential candidates. These profiles capture the highly interconnected political milieu of Tehran. Despite tight government control over the election process, however, the profiles show the surprising diversity of backgrounds of those likely to succeed current Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, from a Shiite cleric to a Stanford-trained Electrical Engineer.
